Great Time in Gulfport!

We had a wonderful time performing in Gulfport at the Catherine Hickman Theatre on Sunday, July 24!

Gulfport is a very special town with the historic Casino, a beach on the intercoastal, great restuarants and shops and best of all... its people. The theatre was sold out and we look forward to a return to Gulfport for another concert.

O Som Do Jazz performs in Gulfport on Sunday, July 24 for Oba Oba Bossa Nova! This will be at the Catherine Hickman Theatre at 4 PM.

The program includes our favorite Brazilian songs by Tom Jobim, Baden Powell, Toquinho and Moacir Santos plus some original selections form our upcoming CD to be released in October.

Gulfport is a very hip and funky town with great restaurants and a wonderful public dock leading out into the intercoastal. There's even a sandy beach near the historic Casino.

Come join us for the concert and then relax in beautiful Gulfport!

On Saturday, July 24 - quartet version of O Som Do Jazz will be playing at a new venue in downtown Dunedin called the Cafe Cabana. It is a very nice craft wine & beer cafe owned by the Casa Tina folks... perhaps the best Mexican restaurant in the Tampa Bay area. We will be performing outside on a deck area covered with trees. We will cover our favorite bossa nova & samba tunes, as always.

I hope to see some long-lost classmates from Dunedin High School... as long as they don't remind me how thin I used to be!

I'm sorry for being silent lately. It has been a busy couple of months with the "day job."

Next week we finish an electro-bossa cut with Andrea's voice and some keyboard tracks. That project (and related tracks) are earmarked for licensing, but one or two may wind up on a CD.

A Turkish label has asked to include our version of Manhã de Carnaval on a compilation lounge recording that they are releasing. That is good news!

We keep adding new tunes to our repertoire. Right now I am arranging Piano na Manguira by Tom Jobim and Dig This Samba by Manfredo Fest.

What songs would you like us to add to our list?

Curtis Ross (Tampa Tribune), had this to say about "Infinita Bossa" in the March 26 newspaper - "Supple, sophisticated sounds from a local outfit well-versed in Brazil's wonderfully diverse music. Take a listen to the lively “Berimbau” and be hooked immediately."

... a great Brazilian musician here in Florida

A few weeks ago I was delighted to see online, that legendary keyboardist, composer, arranger and producer Antonio Adolfo is living in Florida. If you don't know his work, then check out this web site for a short description: progreso-weekly . He is a major figure in Brazilian bossa nova, samba-jazz and MPB. He is also a dedicated educator, sharing the rich music of Brasil in Rio and in Florida.

On a lark, I sent his a copy of our CD last week and he called my answering machine today. That kind of openess and interest in music seems to a wonderful trait of Brazilian musicians. We'll talk tomorrow! I hope that we can have him over to the Tampa Bay area for a concert.

the holidays and ...

O Som Do Jazz is navigating the holidays and preparing for two performances. We have a wedding in a couple weeks followed by First Night St. Petersburg on New Years Eve. That evening, the band will be performing at The Plaza Courtyard, next to Baywalk.

Progress is slow but consistent for the new CD. Rather than a classic approach to bossa nova, this is an electro-bossa project with all original tunes. With little luck, we should be able to finish recording in January.
